It seems to reduce the sense of pain and heat in inflammation, and it may be of use in other conditions, such as colitis and arthritis.
This enzyme has some anticlotting properties, which may be why it has sometimes been recommended in the treatment of coronary artery disease. In fact, some pro-inflammatory eicosanoids (by-products of omega-6 fatty acids) promote clotting, whereas anti-inflammatory eicosanoids (by-products of omega-3 fatty acids) reduce blood clotting. Bromelain is best taken on an empty stomach, and 600 mg daily are worth trying for inflammation. |

Supplemental selenium can help protect against Kashin-Beck disease, a form of arthritis that afflicts many people in China and other parts of Asia who live in selenium-deficient areas.
Then there are toxic metals like mercury. While this is yet to be "proven" conclusively, most nutritional experts I know believe that selenium is a powerful chelator, meaning it attaches to metals like mercury and helps to remove them from the body. Japanese researchers have found that adding selenium to the diets of birds gave them "complete protection" from large amounts of mercury. |

Having offered in turn a theological and a quasi-mechanistic explanation for her illness, she reflected a third time, then leaned forward and confessed to the researcher a deeper suspicion about the cause of her suffering:
Mind you, I sometimes wonder whether arthritis is self-inflicted . . . not consciously. You know, your own body says, "right, shut-up, sit down, and do nothing." I feel very strongly about myself that this happened to me, that one part of my head said, "if you won't put the brakes on, I will."1

| From arthritis? From otherwise unexplained headaches? From something still worse? The persistence of disorders like these in adulthood, people said, often functioned as the body's way of bearing witness to suffering first experienced in childhood but never properly acknowledged and processed. This was because, in contrast to the often self-deceiving, self-denying mind, "the body keeps the score," "the body never lies," "the body remembers. |

What kind of body is it that can use the symptoms of arthritis to tell a person to "shut-up, sit down, and do nothing," literally forcing her to do as it says because her arthritic joints won't allow her to move fast anymore?
The answer is: a talking body. A body that can do what Gil thinks her body has done to her is one that can converse with its owner, conveying messages to her about things going on in her life that she is having difficulty consciously confronting. |

It has a long history of being used successfully against the pain of arthritis and inflammation.
"Wobenzym N has the ability to turn off the switch that produces inflammatory compounds," says Gary Gordon, M.D., who has been using the product in his medical practice for decades.
You don't take Wobenzym N or any systemic enzymes the way you take digestive enzymes. You actually take it away from meals (on an empty stomach). Why? Because proteolytic enzymes digest something very different from food—they "digest" little pain-causing compounds called circulating immune complexes. |

It turned out that the heavy steroids his rheumatologist had prescribed for his arthritis had eaten through the sutures his stomach surgeon had sewn in, and the peritonitis that ensued caused his body to go into shock and his heart to arrest. "Normal courses of antibiotics proved unsuccessful," read his death report.
We knew so little then. Still, thirty years later, when my own frightening journey through autoimmune disease began, it seemed to me that we knew little more than we had in my father's era. |

In animal and human studies, MSM has been shown to help arthritis, either alone or in combination with another popular nutrient, glucosamine sulfate. In one randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in the journal Clinical Drug Investigation, the addition of only 500 mg of MSM to 500 mg of glucosamine resulted in greater reduction of pain and swelling, improvement of functional ability of joints, and better and more rapid improvement, all without major adverse effects. (And in my opinion, the results are way better with higher doses—as happened with my hiking buddy. |

Cow's milk has been linked to numerous negative health conditions such as allergies, anemia, arthritis, asthma, colic, diabetes, heart disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, osteoporosis, stomach ulcers, sinusitis, and a host of infectious and autoimmune diseases. However, current research on organic (unprocessed) raw cow and goat's milk shows are a safer, healthier option.
Yet another toxin lurking in the meat supply is nitrate, which is used to process and cure meats such as bacon, pepperoni, and hot dogs. |

The arthritis Foundation recommends eating at least two fish meals a week—particularly in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines.
High-quality fish oil supplements are an excellent way to get the many health benefits of the omega-3 fatty acids (see page 299).
Other ingredients you may see on the ingredients list in a glucosamine-chondroitin formula may include sea cucumber (Cucumaria frondosa), grape seed extract, boswellia, and turmeric, all of which have varying degrees of anti-inflammatory action. |

Traditionally, turmeric has been used to treat jaundice and other liver problems, promote circulation, dissolve blood clots, relieve the pain of arthritis and rheumatism, and cure diarrhea, sinus congestion, and ear infections. Today, it is also used by AIDS patients as an alternative, organic, natural herbal medicinal remedy to relieve throat and chest congestion. You can add generous amounts of turmeric to your cooked foods every day. Added to vegetables, rice, beans, soups, etc., turmeric does not just taste delicious, but is also deliciously healthy. |
| Native Americans of the Southwest used yucca as shampoo, to treat wounds and sores, as well as symptoms of arthritis and rheumatism. Yucca root extract has no known unpleasant or harmful side effects. It is a rich source of vitamin A and B complex. It has a high content of calcium, potassium, phosphorus, iron, manganese and copper. It is best to buy the liquid Yucca extract, without alcohol, from "Herb Farm" or other sources found on the Internet. Yucca capsules are being absorbed poorly by the body. |

How and Why Heart Attacks Really Occur
Merely cutting off the oxygen supply to the heart may not be enough to destroy it. The heart is one of the most innovative and resilient organs in the body, and it requires excessive abuse to cause it to die. |

It's long had the reputation of being great for joint health and the pain of arthritis. The key to MSM's abilities as a miracle worker is its high sulfur content, which makes sense when you realize that for centuries people have visited sulfur-rich hot springs for muscle aches and pains.
"From a structural point of view, sulfur is extremely important for maintaining connective tissues and joints," says Jacqueline Jacques, N.D. The biochemical precursor to MSM—dimethyl sulfoxide—has been studied extensively for pain and reduction of inflammation for years. |

Her health problems included an inability to see from her left eye, painful arthritis in both hands, tiredness, and generally feeling unwell. As a standard physician, Dr Hoffer 'knew' that these were all old age changes and that there was nothing anyone could do about it. However, as a psychiatrist he also 'knew' that he should offer some hope; provide her with a placebo, if nothing else. By this time he had several years experience taking niacin and niacinamide. They were safe. |

"Though the raw food took care of my arthritis I was never able to stick to it longer than two months because on raw foods alone, 1 dropped weight so quickly, down to 135 lbs, that my wife panicked thinking that I was dying, so 1 had to go back to cooked foods which made my arthritis return. When I started drinking green smoothies, my weight stabilized! I have been raw now for six months and keep my normal weight of 155 lbs. Thank you!" (N. H. |

Some types of arthritis occur when the blood's acidity is high. High blood acidity means low blood energy and low blood solubility. During this state, minerals are not held in solution and thus precipitate improperly. arthritis is typically the result of a meat-based diet. Meat, raw or cooked, is extremely acidic, thus, meat lowers the blood's energy, causing improper mineral precipitation. |

Also in the 1940s, Dr William Kaufman began to treat arthritis patients with large doses of niacinamide, publishing two books and several excellent papers on his successes.12 Then, in the early 1950s, Dr Fred Klenner began to give his patients enormous doses of vitamin C, both orally and intravenously.1^ J4 He claimed that this treatment was able to help patients with very serious diseases, such as hepatic cancer and multiple sclerosis.
In 1955, Dr Hoffer and his colleagues published a brief report showing that controlled large doses of niacin lowered cholesterol levels. |
| After the war, they suffered to an exaggerated degree from all the diseases of aging, including arthritis, blindness, heart disease, neurological deterioration, and depression. Dr Hoffer estimated that one year in a Japanese POW camp aged these soldiers about 5 years, as compared to a normal year living at home. A soldier imprisoned in such a camp at chronological age 35 would come out 4 years later with a biological age of 55.
Former prisoners of war began to suffer predictably after their release. |

A few years ago," he wrote, "Wayne Jonas from the NIH Office of Alternative Medicine in Bethesda, MD, conducted a 12-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 72 patients to assess the validity of Kaufman's earlier observations that niacin was of great benefit to the elderly, reducing arthritis. Jonas reported that niacinamide at 3 g/day reduced overall disease severity by 29%, inflammation by 22% and use of anti-inflammatory medication by 13%." 9 Patients in the placebo group either had no improvement or worsened. |

More familiar to many of us, glucosamine, the over-the-counter natural product that has been touted to help with joint and cartilage problems associated with arthritis, may also provide some relief to individuals with multiple sclerosis. Using a mouse model of MS, neurologists recently found that doses of glucosamine similar to those commonly taken as supplements dramatically delayed the onset of MS symptoms and improved the ability of lab animals to walk and move. Researchers believe that glucosamine may prove useful in human trials for those suffering from MS.

In October 2004, Vioxx, one of the main drugs used to treat arthritis, was voluntarily withdrawn by its manufacturers, Merck and Co. Some 70,000 deaths, largely from cardiovascular episodes, had been associated with this drug's use. Such toxic side effects had been known by the industry for several years. In February 2005, a panel of the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration voted to allow the possible return of Vioxx, provided it carried a striking black-box warning on its label about its cardiovascular risks. Patients who take it will be obliged to sign consent forms. |

| Seemingly unrelated afflictions such as osteoporosis, arthritis, liver disease, and eye inflammation have been reported, but medical doctors still aren't sure exactly why. Drugs are usually prescribed to help control the symptoms of Colitis for as long as possible. Unfortunately these drugs aren't very effective, and about one-third of all patients diagnosed with this disease eventually have their colons removed. The majority of these surgeries are unnecessary and could be avoided with regular intestinal cleansing.

Most adults living in the industrialized world, and especially those suffering a chronic illness such as heart disease, arthritis, MS, cancer, or diabetes, have hundreds if not thousands of gallstones (mainly clumps of hardened bile) blocking the bile ducts of their liver.
This book provides a thorough understanding of what causes gallstones in the liver and gallbladder and why these stones can be held responsible for the most common diseases so prevalent in the world today. |
