SIGNIFICANT FACTS
Mntf Here are some other differ-ences between osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA): m RA usually affects joints symmetrically. For example, both hands or both knees are likely to be affected. OA usually affects only one side at a time.
¦ RA can cause fatigue and low-grade fever. OA doesn't.
¦ OA causes joint and muscle pain that worsens as the day's activities go on. RA tends to be equally bad throughout the day.

Healthy habits
You need a well-rounded game plan to win the war against osteoarthritis (OA). Try these tips to tackle this disease once and for all.
Shed extra pounds. Being overweight puts pressure on your joints. Lose those love handles, and you could improve your arthritis or even prevent it.
Get moving. Stronger muscles can mean stronger joints and less chance of OA, especially in your knees. |

Copper toxicity can cause liver problems, adrenal fatigue, allergies, and osteoarthritis.10 Other sources of copper include birth control pills, intrauterine devices, fungicides, and pesticides, all of which contain copper as a main ingredient. A thorough analysis from a health-care practitioner, including assessment for nutritional status and heavy toxicity, can determine whether copper detoxification or supplementation is needed. |

Obesity can, however, cause other types of disease such as hypertension, dys-lipidemia (high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides), type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, respiratory problems and various forms of cancer. You don't need a Ph.D. or an M.D. to know how those ailments will be treated.

The word arthritis means "inflammation of the joints" and can include several types. osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common—the kind of arthritis that often afflicts people in the knees, fingers, hips, or back as they age or because of wear and tear. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is less common, and is an autoimmune disease: a disease that can affect the entire body, and that involves out-of-control inflammation. RA affects approximately 2.1 million people in the United States; 75 percent are women. |

She also had moderate to severe osteoarthritis in her knees and suffered from headaches and irritable bowel syndrome. Ansella was taking antidepressants and narcotics for symptom control, and she wanted me to prescribe guaifenesin, even though she had been taking this supplement for several years with no measurable improvements.
I asked her if we could add a new dimension to her regimen. I measured her vitamin D level, evaluated her diet, and found that she had a very low vitamin D level—only 24 nanograms per milliliter in the month of June. |

He had some joint deterioration but X-rays and blood work supported his physician's diagnosis of moderate to severe osteoarthritis with no added concerns. He was taking no medications for the arthritis. However, Crawford's usual herbal anti-inflammatories and antirheumatics weren't working.
Over several visits we worked methodically through the usual supplements and nutritional protocols. He ate well; digestion presented no problem. Asking myself to reconsider the man, not his presenting complaint, I reflected on our frequent discussions about his emotional health. |

Although, like osteoarthritis, they can affect our joints, the way in which they do it differs significantly. Rather than being the result of ordinary wear and tear, as in osteoarthritis, these conditions wreak their damage through inflammation caused by an abnormally overheated natural defense system, which is thought to be triggered by environmental damage (see chapter 5).
An understanding of why we develop these autoimmune disorders is vital if we are to have any chance of successfully dealing with them. |
| To an extent this is true, as the greater the wear and tear the body is subjected to, the higher the risk of developing osteoarthritis. So it seems logical that the older one is, the more susceptible to this form of arthritis one will become. As the average age of our population increases, the overall incidence of osteoarthritis should follow suit.
However, not all forms of arthritis showing an upsurge in recent years are so strongly linked to an aging population, since the other important inflammatory musculoskeletal diseases have also been increasing. |

Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and gout are among the most commonly found joint disorders.
Most people stricken with rheumatoid arthritis have a long history of intestinal complaints: bloating, flatulence, heartburn, belching, constipation, diarrhea, coldness and swelling of hands and feet, increased perspiration, general fatigue, loss of appetite, weight reduction, and more. It is reasonable, therefore, to conclude that rheumatoid arthritis is linked with any of these, or similar, symptoms of major intestinal and metabolic disturbances. |
| Gallstones in the liver impair the basic digestive processes and, therefore, play perhaps the most important role in the development of osteoarthritis.
Gout, which is another joint disease connected to weak liver performance, is caused by sodium urate crystals in joints and tendons. Gout occurs in some people whose blood uric acid is abnormally high. When gallstones in the liver begin to affect blood circulation in the kidneys (see "Disorders of the Urinary System"), uric acid excretion becomes inefficient. |

Bruce Moseley, a specialist in orthopedics, recruited 150 patients with severe osteoarthritis of the knee and divided them into three groups. Two-thirds were given either arthroscopic lavage (which washes out degenerative tissue and debris with the aid of a little viewing tube) or another form of debridement (which sucks such tissue out with a tiny vacuum cleaner). The third group were given a sham operation: the patients were surgically prepared, placed under anesthesia, and wheeled into the operating room. Incisions were made in their knees, but no procedure was carried out. |

I also developed osteoarthritis which incapacitated me. Walking was difficult and I needed help to board a bus. I used pain medication. My blood pressure was slightly elevated. Although I considered myself to be nutritionally aware, I used dairy products. My energy was quite low after cancer treatment. I joined a support group to rebuild my immune system. I wanted to be healthy.
The arthritis has diminished. I no longer require medication. I take walks and practice yoga. I am totally vegan, drink juices, and follow a Gary's protocol totally. |
| Eventually, researchers realized that pregnenolone had anti-inflammatory abilities and testing started on rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, osteoarthritis and other autoimmune conditions. They found it had some benefits. However, about the same time, another hormone called Cortisol was being evaluated. Cortisol is also made in the adrenal glands and has powerful anti-inflammatory abilities. Cortisol basically stole the limelight. Scientists doing research on pregnenolone put it aside. There are quite a few studies in the '40s, and in 1950 and 1951, then hardly anything up to 1996, 1997. |

Obesity is also associated with psychosocial problems such as binge eating disorders and depression for some individuals [17]. Individuals who are obese are also adversely impacted by social bias and discrimination [18-20]. |

The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Fibromyalgia often is considered an arthritis-related condition, but it is not a true form of arthritis because it does not cause inflammation or damage to the joints. According to the Arthritis Foundation, nearly one in three adults has arthritis or chronic joint symptoms, and arthritis is the leading cause of disability among Americans older than age fifteen.

It isn't usually related to aging or wear-and-tear, and tends to strike at a younger age than osteoarthritis. Joints affected by RA inflammation can lose cartilage and end up with OA.
An osteoarthritic joint has lost some or all of the tough, moist, slippery cushion of cartilage that once prevented bone from rubbing against bone. This can happen from overuse, underuse, injury, poor posture, being overweight, or a genetic tendency towards arthritic disease. Food sensitivities or allergies can also contribute to arthritic pain (see inset at right). |

A study from Boston University tracked a group of 640 senior citizens to determine the role of nutrients in osteoarthritis risk. About half started out the study with arthritic symptoms. By the end of the eight-year study, it was evident that those who took in the most vitamin C from food and supplements were three times less likely to end up with arthritis or to have worsening symptoms. Joint pain was also much less in those who consumed more vitamin C, a natural anti-inflammatory.
