Tai Chi and hydrotherapy shown to significantly help arthritis sufferers

According to the arthritis Foundation, arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States and affects 46 million Americans. Osteoarthritis, often referred to as "OA," is also called osteoarthroses or degenerative joint disease, and is diagnosed in 21 million people in the U.S. Typical onset is after age 40. On May 3, 2007, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) released a statement that the prevalence of all types of arthritis will likely surge in the coming decades, reaching as many as 67 million Americans by 2030.
Researchers from the George Institute for International Health at the University of Sydney published their results in the current issue of the journal arthritis & Rheumatism. Marlene Fransen, lead researcher, and her co-workers studied 152 men and women over 60 with chronic osteoarthritis. The research team randomly assigned participants to hydrotherapy classes, Tai Chi classes or a waiting group. The classes, one hour in length, were offered two times per week. After 12 weeks, both groups showed significant improvements on scores measuring pain and physical function.

RHEUMATISM See arthritis. RINGWORM Ringworm {tinea) is a fungal skin infection that can affect various parts of the body. The different types of ringworm are classified by the areas of the body they infect. Ringworm on general areas of the body (arms, legs, trunk) is called tinea corporis; ringworm on the scalp is called tinea capitis; ringworm in the grain area is called tinea cruris (also called jock itch); and ringworm on the feet is called tinea pedis (or athlete's foot). Ringworm typically appears as itchy, red, raised, scaly patches of skin that may blister and ooze.

KIDNEY STRESS The kidneys are the organs responsible for filtering the blood and removing waste products, sodium, and excess water, which are released from the kidneys in the form of urine into the bladder. The most important waste products for the kidneys to eliminate are those generated by the breakdown of proteins, which control the body's acid balance. In that way, the kidneys regulate pH balance.
Left undetected, Lyme disease can cause spleen and lymph node enlargement, arthritis, brain damage, and an irregular heart rhythm. Symptoms usually subside slowly over a period of two to three years. Although antibiotic therapies are generally implemented, no cure has yet been found. If Lyme disease is suspected, consult with a physician as soon as possible. The sooner antibiotics are used, the more successful they are.
Research is indicating that increasing levels of these compounds, which include vitamins C and E, betacarotene, selenium, coenzyme Ql 0, flavonoids, and sulfur-containing amino acids (cystein and methionine), can reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, arthritis, macular degeneration, and other age-related degenerative conditions.
The cats fed cooked and pasteurized milk developed common degenerative diseases such a diabetes and arthritis, while the group of cats fed only raw food prospered, living much longer than the cats from the other groups. Dr. Pottenger reported the underlying nutritional factor had to be a substance that was destroyed by the heat used in the cooking and pasteurization processes; the raw foods not exposed to this processing maintained this substance (enzymes), while the cooked and processed food did not.
Enzyme therapy has been used to treat arthritis for many years, particularly because of the ability of certain enzymes to reduce inflammation. Enzymes also improve circulation, support tissue repair, and improve nutrient absorption and pH balance to improve overall health of the body's tissues.

The recent study out of the New England Journal of Medicine had a headline like this: "Natural remedies don't work for arthritis." When you look at the data for mild arthritis, Celebrex and the natural remedies are about equally effective. For moderate to severe arthritis, the natural remedies are far more effective -- and the spin headline says, "Don't use natural remedies." Now, there are two things that help me figure out what's going on with that. One, it's in the New England Journal of Medicine, which almost never prints anything positive about natural remedies.

The active component of this herb, parthenolide, is proven to work by lowering NF kappaB to reduce inflammation.728,729,730 The herb is highly effective at getting straight to the gene signal causing the problem.

Otzi was forty-six years old at the time of his death, and among his physical afflictions were intestinal parasites and arthritis. He also had some fifty-seven tattoos on his skin. Some were dark blue dots. Others were + signs, or short parallel lines. Infrared photography also revealed long tattooed lines. But the location of some of the tattoos is fascinating. They correspond with the meridian lines used in acupuncture to treat stomach complaints and arthritis, the very complaints from which Otzi is known to have suffered.

Interview with Michael T. Murray, ND - natural alternatives to Vioxx

You don't get arthritis, pain or inflammation because your body is deficient in Vioxx, right? Good medicine involves trying to identify the underlying cause. The most widespread use of Vioxx is in the treatment of osteoarthritis, a degenerative condition where the body does not manufacture sufficient quantities of cartilage. Eventually you get bone rubbing on bone. Natural medicine does extremely well in the treatment of osteoarthritis. In double blind, placebo controlled studies, a number of natural products have confirmed documented benefits.

Overall, one in seven people has some form of arthritis, 40 million in the United States. That number is expected to increase to one in six by 2020. The Inflammation Syndrome Connection Immune cells are drawn to sites of injury, where they release powerful inflammatory compounds. Immune cells help clean up damaged cells, such as in torn ligaments, strained tendons, and flakes of bone and cartilage. Many mild injuries may not even be noticed, or their complete healing may be wrongly assumed.
SAMe has often been recommended for treating inflammation and arthritis: it donates sulfur molecules to glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, enabling the body to build new collagen and cartilage. SAMe also has been found helpful in treating depression, though B-complex vitamins can boost SAMe levels and are less expensive. Its benefit in depression suggests a common biochemical defect with inflammation. Depression is frequently associated with some inflammatory diseases such as asthma, Alzheimer's, coronary artery disease, and diabetes.

About 15 percent of people with psoriasis also have arthritic joints, a condition known as psoriatic arthritis. Psoriasis tends to be worse during the winter months, when the air is drier and people have less exposure to sunlight. Finally, wrinkling reflects age-related changes in the skin, including free-radical damage to the proteins forming skin and a thinning of the skin. Wrinkling can be accelerated by smoking and by excessive exposure to the sun. How Common Are Skin Disorders? Everyone experiences some type of dermatitis from time to time.
This constellation of related diseases, such as the combination of heart disease, arthritis, and periodontitis, can best be described as the Inflammation Syndrome. Estimated Number of North Americans with Some Inflammatory Diseases Millions of North Americans suffer from inflammatory disorders, some of which have only recently been recognized as inflammatory in nature: Everyone experiences inflammation at one time or another, and we actually need it to survive. But chronic inflammation is a sign that something has gone seriously awry with your health.
Research has similarly shown that supplements containing EPA, DHA, and GLA have striking antiinflammatory properties in arthritis, allergies, asthma, and many other -itis diseases. This is why these fatty acids are the first-line supplements for preventing and reversing inflammation. More Firefighters: Omega-9 Fatty Acids Another group of fatty acids, known as the omega-9 family, also possesses impressive anti-inflammatory properties. Your body can make omega-9 fatty acids from other fats, assuming that things work the way they should, but some foods provide a direct source of them.

In 2002, the CEO of Pfizer rhapsodized over Celebrex: "Millions of people who were once crippled with arthritis can now work, walk, garden, and do all the little things that make life worthwhile."37 Amidst the explosion of sales and use, especially for the relief of pain from arthritis and other chronic conditions, there were rumblings of problems. In 2001, a team of researchers led by Eric Topol38 published a meta-analysis in JAMA showing that Vioxx use increased the risk of heart attacks fivefold.39 In response, Merck conducted its own study which found a much smaller risk.
